Design for oil pressure ranges; lube and non-lube
The AAVOLYN 255 style packing case is designed for oil pressure ranges in both lubricated and non lubricated service. All sealing surfaces are precision ground. Tie rods align the individual cups to ensure proper function of lubrication vent and purge systems. Close tolerances are held on all components to increase packing ring life. The highest quality
materials are used throughout to extend the life of the assembly and allow for reconditioning without limiting performance.
The AAVOLYN Type 655 series water cooled case, because of its unique design brings a high cooling flow rate to the sealing surface. Heat transfer is directly enhanced by the amount of surface area exposed and the reduced distance between the heat source and the cooling.
Special features such as internal O-ring seals around the water chambers and encased O-ring seals between each cup prevent any leakage of gas into the water cooling patterns.
Each water cooled cup is fitted with access plugs to flush out the internal water surfaces where scale may build up. This scale buildup can reduce heat transfer and restrict coolant flow during the life of the packing case.

Aavolyn Cast Iron Packing assemblies which feature cast iron cups are made from pearlitic gray containing TYPE A graphite. Gray iron bars made to this specification have optimal strength, wear and hardness.
Cup material is well suited for applications requiring high resistance to wear and response to heat treatment. Flanges are steel.
AAVOLYN TY275 step cup packing case assembly incorporates vent and lube connections to the case. The lube connection allows lubricating oil to be introduced in the packing case to cool the rod packing and remove heat from the sealing area. The vent connection, drilled and tapped, removes any gas which passes the sealing rings.

Packing case gaskets are a critical component to the packing case
assembly. Any damage to the gasket will cause leakage when the packing
case is installed in the stuffing box. Because of interaction of certain
gases on various metals, different materials are used in certain
applications. Copper is used in Air service, Inert gases, nitrogen, sweet
natural gas, methane, ethane, oxygen, argon and ethylene. Soft Iron is
used in sour natural gas, ammonia, and CO2. Monel is used in chlorine and
vinyl chloride. Aluminum is used when specified by the Original Equipment
Manufacturer.

Stainless steel Packing Case assemblies are used in applications where there are high concentrations of H2S or other caustic compounds in the gas.
AAVOLYN TY255 is the most commonly used case design by the compressor builders today. Exhibiting either a round, eliptical, or irregular flange with lube, vent, coolant and purge connections made on the face of the flange and or on the O.D., the case is found in pressures from 50 lbs to
5000 lbs.

Oil wiper assemblies come in various styles and configurations based on
the compressor manufacturer's compressor design. All assemblies include
the Aavolyn wiper ring configuration allowing for effective wiping of oil
from the rod surface and providing for rapid flow of oil away from the rod
area.

This design of packing case is the oldest type to be used for mechanical packing
installations on reciprocating compressors. Originally, compressors & steam engines used
braided type packing for the low pressure ranges experienced. Braided packing required
constant adjustment of the gland which held the packing in place. This was necessary to
maintain a seal along the rod and to prevent leakage around the packing. Excessive
tightening could damage the shaft. As the packing wore in the bore from the reciprocating
motion of the rod, continuous tighting was necessary.
Mechanical packing replaced the braided design and required no adjustment to maintain a
seal after initial installation. This mechanical design uses a ...

Recommended for use in Oxygen, Argon and Helium service, AAVOLYNMET?
bronze packing case assemblies function effectively transferring heat from
the sealing areas, both in liquid cooled and standard applications.
Particularly important for use in oxygen service to eliminate the
possiblity of sparking when coming in contact with other metallic
surfaces.

The inside solid design is used where the case flange is part of the compressor and not
suppplied with the packing case. Normally the Type 65 assemble replaces a braided or soft
packing. AAVOLYN engineers can utilize this design to upgrade your reciprocating
compressors or pumps to mechanical packing where you may presently be utilizing a soft
packing style of seal. The case will work with the existing flange and greatly extend packing
life while eliminating rod wear.
The first Milled and Drilled packing assemblies were introduced with the introduction of non lubricated compressors. Sealing materials used in non lube service ( primarily filled Teflon's) were much more susceptible to heat. Extrusion can occur along the rod, thus resulting in the loss of sealing ability. The Milled and Drilled design brings the coolant closer to the sealing area. Milled grooves on the back side of the packing cups allow coolant to circulate behind the packing grooves. With a flow pattern developed through the cups, coolant is introduced from the gland face through the milled passages and out again for recalculation.
